LONDON TRAVEL DIRECTIONS

To London:

By plane:

London is served by a number of airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stansted and Luton. London Heathrow is the most convenient of these for onward travel to South Kensington, as the Piccadilly line underground service runs direct from all terminals to South Kensington. However, it is possible to travel from any of the London airports; the programme manager Naomi will be happy to provide any assistance in planning your trip.

By rail:

London is very well-connected by rail with all other parts of the UK. Eurostar trains are available from Lille, Brussels and Paris into London St Pancras station. Once at St Pancras, onward travel to South Kensington is possible by the underground on the Piccadilly line, by bus, or by taxi. Travel within London can be planned using the Transport for London website; for trains going to London or for travel elsewhere in the UK, please consult National Rail Enquiries.

By road:

We do not advise driving into central London. Car parking is very limited and expensive. Please also note that the entirety of South Kensington is within the congestion charge zone. Driving into this area costs £8 per day if paid beforehand or £10 if paid the day after travel. After this, there is a penalty charge.

Getting back after the Conference:

After day three of the conference on 17 July 2009, a coach will take delegates to their choice of Reading bus station or London St Pancras. From Reading it is possible to get a bus to London Heathrow Airport (see this link for timetables) or a train to London Gatwick Airport (see the National Rail website for timetables). London St Pancras is convenient for London Luton Airport via either the Midland Mainline or First Capital Connect services (again, see the National Rail website for times). Trains to the north and to Brighton in the south are available from St Pancras, and is next to the tube station King's Cross St Pancras which is on a number of tube routes. For more information about onward travel in London, please visit the Transport for London website.

It is not possible to be absolutely precise about the journy times from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. However, it is advised that delegates expect that the journey to Reading by coach will take at least one hour, and that the journey to London St Pancras should take around 2hrs in total.

Imperial College London will host the plenary conference in July 2009
